The Millennium Technology Prize, worth €1M is awarded to technological innovations that have a groundbreaking impact to humankind. The global prize was established in 2004 by Finnish high-tech industries, academic institutions and the state, the first winner being Tim Berners-Lee who invented the World Wide Web. In 2012, Linus Torvalds received the prize for his Linux Kernel Operating System which has become the basis of Android phones, tablets, digital-television recorders and supercomputers globally. The latest was granted in 2020 to Shankar Balasubramanian and David Klenerman for their innovation of Next Generation DNA Sequencing which has a huge impact in genomics, medicine and biology field. On July 14, Millennium Technology Prize holds a panel discussion on technology innovations in SuomiAreena, arena for democracy and freedom of speech. The panel is hosted by the Technology Academy Finland (TAF)’s Chair of the Board, Professor of Space Physics Minna Palmroth. Other participants are Tuomo Suntola, Millennium Technology Prize winner in 2018, Vaisala’s CEO Kai Öistämö and Mika Pantzar, Professor at the University of Helsinki.
